Extension

Adding space to a home via extension is one answer to increasing your living environment without needing to delve into the property market. Extensions can take a number of formats – contrasting or complementary, double-storey or underground, sunroom or annexe – with the options merely limited by space, area and budget. You might even want to reconfigure the existing room arrangement to complement and add efficiency to the additional space.

As with all home-building projects, thorough research is integral, but here’s a few of the essentials:

• Be aware of how your extension will affect neighbours who may attempt to block plans with the legally established ‘right to light’.
• Remember that there are different development rules for terraced and semi-detached houses, as well as Conservation Areas and listed buildings.
• Recognise that some trees are protected by Tree Preservation Orders before you remove them!
• Once you have planning signed off, you can start work within 48 hours of notifying building control.
