Brio, the world-leading designer and manufacturer of sliding and folding door hardware solutions, is helping Input Joinery of Andover in Hampshire create its prestigious hardwood bi-folding door installations, including a highly specialist curved bi-folding door project.

“Having seen many beautiful properties desecrated by the craze for aluminium and plastic doors and windows we felt it was time for Input Joinery to fight back with a range of products truly worthy of our name as a provider of high quality joinery,” says Mark Fisher, Managing Director at Input Joinery.

He goes on to explain that sliding folding timber doors are a relatively new concept in the UK for domestic properties and are becoming very popular in both the new-build and replacement window/door market. “They can open to almost 95% of the opening available, unlike traditional sliding patio doors which only open to about 45% of the available width. The maximum width of each leaf is around 1.0m and the maximum door height around 3.3m. Systems can be manufactured from just two leaves to a maximum of 16, with one leaf being used for access.”

At the moment, he says, Input Joinery is manufacturing around eight to ten high-end bi-folding hardwood door projects a month and now relies solely on Brio to supply the hardware. “We like the Weatherfold range from Brio and we also favour Brio’s mortise hinges which give a traditional joinery finish to the doors. Before we discovered Brio we had been using another well-known supplier but after meeting the Brio staff at a trade show on a visit with Westward Building Services, we decided we liked the product and liked the support they were offering.

“The most recent project we have undertaken came via architect Chris Tizzard who had specified a set of curved bi-folding hardwood doors on a large private house: he recommended us to the building contractor Kircher Building Services of Lightwater. This was a very specialised commission so we took time to discuss the best way forward with Brio as we needed, for example, to calculate how the track would bend, and they worked with us closely to manufacture and supply the necessary hardware – which fitted absolutely spot-on and the doors work perfectly. It was a first for us and everyone is exceptionally pleased with the result.

A family firm founded in 1979 with a staff of five, now well into its fourth decade, Input Joinery has built a reputation for quality products and customer service and now employs 60 staff with a turnover of around £4 million per annum.

“Our aim is to supply our customers with superior quality joinery, which includes high performance hardwood windows and hardwood doors, hardwood conservatories, orangeries, sunrooms and staircases. For Input Joinery we really do require product that is reliable, robust and can stand up to years of wear and tear. It has to be strong to cope with heavy hardwood doors opening and closing over their lifetime.

“For straight sliding applications we like the Brio Timberoll range of bottom hanging hardware. We continue to be vibrant and dynamic, at the forefront of the industry, meeting new challenges, moving forward, exploring new markets and fine tuning the operation to ensure the company is ideally positioned to take advantage of the improving market opportunities,” says Mark Fisher.

David Newton, General Manager at Brio UK comments: “Brio is a global provider able to offer architects a win-win situation as we manufacture and supply products that are flexible and are more than happy to adapt products to work with various materials thereby allowing the architect the freedom to think outside the box and be flexible within budgets. Not only are they guaranteed proven quality product that has been tried and tested in different areas of the world, they also benefit from total solutions engineered for any project.

“Like Input Joinery, Brio is focused on bringing adventurous ideas to life, converting conceptual thoughts into exciting reality and I sincerely believe the Brio range of quality, well-designed product bears this out. We are a solutions company and a world leader in design and quality.”
