New England style with Black Millwork

An impressive self-build property with a unique American style has used highly efficient Andersen windows and a bespoke front door supplied by Black Millwork to create an eye-catching feature.

The striking four bedroom, three bathroom family home sits comfortably in its two acre plot in the heart of the Surrey greenbelt. Spanning 2,700 square feet and benefitting from a separate tennis court and oak-framed detached garage, the property stands on the footprint of the original 19th Century cottage, which was beyond reasonable repair and demolished to make way for the new development.

The £1.25 million property, inspired by the New England style, includes a number of large feature windows with quarter and half circle finishes, as well as a bespoke front door to match.

Amanda Edge, owner of the property with her husband Chris, commented: “We have always wanted to self build and when the cottage came onto the market in 2012 just a few roads away from our existing home we decided to take the plunge. The thought of being able to design and shape a house to your own exact requirements and tastes was very appealing so it was important to find suppliers that were willing to adapt and journey with us through the process. Black Millwork, in this respect were perfect as they listened to what we wanted and created a number of unique pieces for us, including our front door which I am particularly pleased with.”

Installed at the property were 49 Andersen casement windows finished in white Perma-Shield on the exterior and a white electrostatically applied paint on the interior. The premium finish of the windows is matched by their impressive energy performance – achieving a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K along with 3 sets of French doors.

Also installed was a unique design entrance door with half and quarter circle glazing to match the feature windows. Benefitting from a comprehensive 10-year warranty, the door achieves a U-value of 1.44 W/m²K.

Amanda continued: “The inspiration for my new home was a picture of a New England property I’d found a number of years ago. I loved the natural materials used and so timber windows and doors were the obvious choice. It was also important to me that my new house be as comfortable as possible, not only did this mean that we wanted lots of natural daylight to flood the interior but we also wanted it to be very thermally efficient – Black Millwork’s range of products fitted this brief very well.

“I’m so pleased with the end result and I’m particularly happy with the fenestration as it really adds to the character of the property. I’m also extremely happy that the project came in on time and on budget. I found Black Millwork very easy to work with as a first time self-builder and very reasonably priced too.”
