August 2023

Welcome to the August edition of i-build magazine! This issue is packed with inspirational projects and products as well as useful advice for your self-build.

Georgian architecture possesses a truly alluring charm with its well-balanced and symmetrical proportions, timeless appeal, stately entranceways, impressive columns and decorative mouldings. As one of my favourite residential architectural eras, the beauty of a Georgian home is universally appreciated.

Recently, Robert Hirschfield Architects (RHA) renovated a Georgian gem nestled in the leafy Hampstead Garden Suburb near London's infamous Hampstead Heath. Even before laying eyes on it, I knew the beauty of this home would be captivating. RHA's brief was to create an open-plan setting while maintaining the ability to define spaces that could be closed off. The design also considered the changing needs of a home with three young children. The result is an incredible transformation, showcased in the inspirational Vine House, named after its intricately-carved grape vine detailing on the front gable. See page 12 for the full tour.

Moving to central London, we explore another Georgian home designed by architect firm Studio Bua and interior designer Eliská Design. Located in a private mews within the Belgravia conservation area, the house had good bones but lacked personality. The collaboration between Studio Bua and Eliská Design led to the transformation of this nondescript Georgian mews house into something truly remarkable. Turn to page 18 to learn more.
