Glass Flooring – Letting in the light

As basements are now being used as increased living space, how do you channel and maximise the available natural light in to these areas in a way that is creative, stylish and functional? The answer is one of Glass Design and Build London’s bespoke glass flooring solutions.

A glass floor installation by Glass Design and Build London (GDBL) at a London property highlights the benefits of our creative and innovative designs combining structural glass and high-quality materials.

Replacing a failed existing and impractical walkway

GDBL were contacted to replace a poorly constructed glass walkway above the basement kitchen. The excess heat from the Aga range in the kitchen below had, over a period of time, discoloured the original glass walkway and glass balustrade due to the incorrect glass used along with the existing steelwork being on show and unsightly, turning the area into a discoloured-yellow tinted eyesore.

A stunning transformation

GDBL transformed the whole basement area of the house, using the key elements in our name:

• GLASS: It’s our principle building material. We have decades of experience in working with structural glass. We develop and source the finest glass for use in our bespoke installations. On this project, we used a combination of extra-extra clear structural glass flooring and glass beams to create a contemporary seamless glass floor, with hidden secret fixings.

• DESIGN: Incorporating a bold architectural feature such as a glass floor requires meticulous design and planning. Our design team created a scheme to transform a small glass walkway into an airy additional living space, which flooded the basement kitchen below with natural light.

As a feature of the project we replicated an existing design within the property and produced a bespoke wrought iron balustrade that was not only stylish but was also a practical solution, as it aided the airflow and distribution of heat from the Aga range below.

• AND BUILD: Through our creative design, engineering prowess and innovative solutions - we provided the client with a full turn-key approach through our dedicated in-house design and installation teams resulting in the stunning, finished project below and what started out as a requirement to replace some discoloured glass evolved, through our expertise in glass flooring, into a feature giving stunning effect to the basement kitchen and area below.
